Journalist Matt Taibbi has done his own surveillance campaign on the U.S. Intelligence Community. His report “Yes, Virginia, There is a Deep State” chronicles the rehabilitation and comeback of the CIA, NSA, and FBI.
All three of those big government agencies share the blame for the intelligence failure that led to 9/11 and the Russian collusion hoax played on President Donald Trump.
In a historic flipping of the playing field, the Trump era saw a remarkable comeback as liberal Trump haters decided that leveraging all that investigation and intelligence was smart politics. Matt points out how leaks from deep state minions during the Trump era tied up the news cycle endlessly.
They likely were behind the stories about bounties on US troop members heads by foreign fighters. As well as leaks about President Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy.
Most remarkably, Taibbi points out, is how those three agencies morphed into political operatives and leakers. The CIA fought back hard when President Trump ignored them and trampled their turf. Most telling was Senator Schumer’s public warning (or wry observation) that President Trump should be careful when dealing with those folks. The CIA has “seven ways to Sunday” to get revenge according to Senator Schumer.
It was an NSA fly on the wall that listened in on President Trump’s conversation with the President of Ukraine. The nothing-burger that Rep. Schiff and his intelligence committee tried to cook up failed, but the deep state feasted in the press coverage, while Trump haters reveled.
In his interview on the Rising podcast, Taibbi points out how the intelligence services achieved a turnaround in public perception. Whereas media hit pieces once resulted in a massive public credibility gap, the pivot point was President Trump, who coined the term “deep state” and the media pundits switched sides and defended those failing agencies.
