One of President Trump’s main campaign strategies in 2016 was to always keep the conversation about him. The fact that the media was constantly attacking his most popular ideas always helped, because the media couldn’t just explain the popular policy ideas — they had to exaggerate them.
So, the media would take Trump’s idea to impose a moratorium on immigration from terrorism hotbeds, and the media would freak out and amplify the message by screeching, “It’s a Muslim ban!” Even people who hadn’t been paying attention to the 2016 race were suddenly stopping, thinking for a moment, and then deciding, “Hey, that’s not such a bad idea.”
Anytime an opponent has an event, Trump has an even bigger counter-event, even if it’s slapped together at the last second. Since it would be too difficult to A) run a full-time Trump event to counter the 4-day Democrat National Convention, and B) be the president full-time at the same time, Trump has adopted a different strategy this time to counter the Dems’ convention.
How is Trump countering the Democrats convention? Well, it goes without saying that he went big. If you’ve been on the internet at all the past few days, you’ve seen exactly what Donald Trump did. He bought up all of the highest-priced, highest profile ad space on the internet. In what was the single largest ad buy in internet history, Donald Trump has choked out the possibility of the Democrats running visible ads on the web during their virtual convention. So much winning!
