In the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests over the summer, Democratic lawmakers led by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas (Democrat) called for a bill to consider reparations for slavery.
Remington Belford, a spokesperson for Lee said, “In response to our current focus on Black inequality, H.R. 40 allows for the first constructive, scholarly conversation on race that is clearly needed in the U.S. today. It offers full discussion on the analysis of economic, political, psychological, scientific, and sociological effects of slavery in the US.”
Calls for a “study” abound, including for the office of incoming President to be Joe Biden. The state of California passed a resolution to create a reparations task force.
But opponents say that slavery made it all but impossible for most African Americans to track their lineage before the Civil War, so how could they prove they descended from slaves?
Writer David Frum warned The Atlantic that if a reparations bill were passed, it would be expanded to apply to other groups like Native Americans yet leave out many others.
Conservative activist Bob Woodson told The Hill that reparations are “yet another insult to Black America that is clothed in the trappings of social justice.”

The most rediculous thing I have ever heard! That was over 160 years ago. You want to give reparations? Give them to the families of the union soldiers who died fighting for the end of slavery! Slavery had been around since the beginning of time. Didn’t matter what race you were. You where conquered, you became a slave. In fact it was mainly the African people who caught and sold thier own people to the Arab slave traders. Get over it! This liberal nonsense has to end somewhere! And a large majority of the white people aren’t racit ,like we are being accused by the democratic party. Consider how many million people’s ancestors came here after the civil war. How could their children and grand children be held responsible in any manner. My Grandparents came here in the late 18th century from Ireland.

During the slave days in this once-great nation, it was probably the wealthy that owned the most slaves, bought the most, and sold the most. At one time, we taxed the wealthy on their excess. In 1961, the highest tax bracket was 91%. Now it is at 37%, but the wealthy make most of their money from non-salaried sources, so they pay no more than 15%-20% on that money. The median American family is in the 22% bracket, so the wealthy pay a lower percentage on the majority of their income than most Americans pay on their total income. If we are going to tax White people for wrongs they never committed, then we should put all of the rich people’s income in the same bracket as their salaries, and collect more from them.
You are so foolish. The top 5% of earners in this country pay 80% of the taxes. It doesn’t matter what bracket they are in. If you confiscated the all wealth of these people it would run the country for about a month. Then what would you do?
California, New York and other Democrat run states are learning that if you tax the rich or people with means they move. The wealthy can move quickly and then you have nothing.
All people who live in this country should pay taxes no matter of what their status is. It is a privilege to live in America. If you want to make it fair get rid of the current progressive tax system and then replace it with a Consumption Tax. Then the rich would pay more because they spend more. And don’t tell me it would hurt the poor. I was poor once and through hard work and education I got ahead. Began to work at 10 years old.

I agree. Why should people who Never Owned Slaves pay reparations to people Who NEVER WERE Slaves? I am not racist or White Supremacist by any means, although I am white. I treat people as PEOPLE, regardless of their race or skin color, and expect the same in return, but the idea of paying reparations is so absurd, as to be laughable, and not be worthy of serious consideration by anyone possessing even a modicum of common sense and/or half a brain.

My great grandfather lost his three older brothers, aged 17, 21, and 28, who were killied fighting for the union army. Does my family get reparations for the loss to my family?
I am of Irish descent and the Irish had nothing to do with slavery. Indeed, 25,000 Irish died fighting for black freedom. Will we get reparations from blacks? No, and we wouldn’t want them anyway. Fighting for the union was part of our rite of passage to becoming Americans. I have many friends whose ancestors came to this country because of oppression and came after the Civil War. Why should they pay taxes for reparations?
This case for reparations has to stop. Finality is a doctrine courts use and for good reason. At some time a claim, having been litigated, must end.
OK Spanky let’s not forget that it was blacks who captured other blacks and sold them to black slave traders. How about we investigate the blacks, that actually pay taxes, first. Only seems fair to me.

After reading the foregoing replies, it is apparent folks are really ignorant on the issue of slavery and the so-called Civil War. To begin with, the main and largest slave markets where slaves were sold were all in the north and one of the most active was in sight of the White House. the President, the Senate and the Congress and the Supreme Court also, dis-honest Abe stated numerous time he had no authority to free slaves! In the south, about 25% of the free blacks owned slaves and they were the cruelest slave masters while only about 5% of the whites owned slaves and treated them like family members, the slaves in the north were treated far worse (cruelty wise) than those in the south! It is true, the blacks captured other blacks and, those they did not eat, they sold to white slavers (research this and learn who (what nationality) owned the ships and captained them, they should be held to account but, they’re all dead now!
As for the war being waged to free slaves, it was not until the war was about 2 years old and the north was losing big time. Lincoln initiated the draft and the purpose of the war was changed from Lincoln’s desire for big government to freeing the slaves (but only in the south)! The initial and real reason for the war was to keep the south tied to the north because the north and its big businessmen was getting filthy rich off of the south!
Lincoln’s great emancipation proclamation was in force only in the south and only where the union army was in control.
I am not trying to demean or insult anyone but, it is long past time to learn the truth about the so-called slave era of our history and the very first lesson has to be that only the winners of a way get to write the history of the war and what preceded it!! Instead of regurgitating the lies fed to you as children and the prostituted news media and the virtually Communist controlled public school systems, owned and controlled by our corrupt government both federal and local, do a little research and reading on your own, the information is out there! You will have to search it out and it will require ignoring the talking heads on TV and the education consisting well structured being force fed to children in government schools! We, as adults, need to use our brains for something other than a place holder/filler in our craniums!!!!

It’s very simple. If anyone living today can prove they were a slave in the Confederate States of America they SHOULD receive reparations. Anyone else is nothing but a parasite and should be ashamed of the scam they are playing.
