Round two of the Twitter Files has exposed that the social media giant has actively been silencing conservative voices for years while publicly claiming they would ‘never do something like that.’
The files revealed that Twitter has been placing people on secretive “blacklists” which limit an individual’s ability to spread information on the platform.
Journalist Bari Weiss released the information in another lengthy Twitter thread which, in addition to the blacklists, confirmed the platform has prevented disfavored tweets from trending on the platform, and actively limited the visibility of entire accounts and even trending topics in secret, without informing users.
This multi-tiered censorship operation began at the top with a group known as the “Site Integrity Policy, Policy Escalation Support,” AKA “SIP-PES.”
“This secret group included Head of Legal, Policy, and Trust (Vijaya Gadde), the Global Head of Trust & Safety (Yoel Roth), subsequent CEOs Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal, and others,” Weiss said.
“This is where the biggest, most politically sensitive decisions got made. ‘Think high follower account, controversial,’ another Twitter employee told us. For these ‘there would be no ticket or anything.’”
In 2018, however, Gadde – who was directly involved in the censorship – said, “We do not shadow ban. And we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology.”
