Yes, that’s not a typo. A BLM leader used funds they’d solicited from Americans following the death of George Floyd to buy a mega-mansion in California. The truth is out now, however, and donors and activists are not happy.
There’s a reason some of the group’s top leaders abruptly resigned following some investigation. Not many people are going to be okay with a civil rights movement funding someone’s lavish lifestyle.
The bigger scandal may be the secrecy behind the purchase. The home’s ownership was transferred to an LLC in Delaware so that the names of the home’s owners would not be disclosed.
The BLM foundation said it had always planned to disclose the property and was acquired in “furtherance of BLM’s mission” according to the group. It was reportedly expected to be used as a studio of some sort for the movement, although it is unclear if this took place.
