The second impeachment trial of Donald Trump is a monumental event in American history, and not just because it is an even dumber impeachment than the last one. It’s a really big deal because it will tell us several things about the future of America.
First, Donald Trump is obviously not in office anymore. He’s a private citizen now. Impeachment is meant to remove an office-holder from office. Therefore, Democrats are quite possibly establishing a dangerous new precedent under constitutional law.
If this impeachment goes through, then any future Congress could simply impeach any private citizen who tries to run for office if they don’t like that person, and bar them from holding office. Is anyone okay with that standard?
Next, this impeachment trial is going to tell us the direction of the Republican party for years to come. Mitch McConnell wants to be the de facto leader of the GOP in the “post-Trump” era, whereas a majority of the American people are fairly confident that we are not even in the post-Trump era.
If McConnell can convince 17 Republicans to convict Donald Trump, it will tell us that the Republican Party is now as relevant to American life as the Whig Party. Convicting Donald Trump would likely be an act of suicide for the party founded by Abraham Lincoln.
