What Caliber Would Be Needed to Take Down a Tyrannosaurus Rex?

In the spirit of discovery, Americans continue trying to answer the most important scientific questions that cross our minds. What American man hasn’t wondered at some point, “Could I take down a massive dinosaur with my everyday carry sidearm?”

Okay, maybe that’s not very scientific. Or practical. But wouldn’t it be fun to find out?

The good folks at Kentucky Ballistics decided to find out what caliber it would take to drop Tyrannosaurus Rex in its tracks. They ran an experiment in June to find out, in the name of science and shooting really big guns because it’s fun.

A company built a life-sized gel replica of a T. rex skull for the experiment. It was over 6 feet long and weighed more than 600 pounds. Then they started blasting away!

The host blasts the skull with a variety of pistols, from a 9mm to a wrist-punishing .500 Magnum. Then, he breaks out some shotguns and finally switches to the really big, shoulder destroying safari rifles.

So, which caliber does it take to penetrate a T. rex skull? We don’t want to give away the answer, but it’s definitely big. Watch as the host gives his shoulder a beating to answer this important scientific question. And because it’s fun shooting things:
