Bloomberg News reports that U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said there is “enormous evidence” that the coronavirus outbreak began in a Wuhan, China laboratory and Beijing is refusing to give international scientists access to documents that prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Pompeo said on ABC’s This Week this past Sunday, “There is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in Wuhan … These are not the first times that we’ve had a world exposed to viruses as a result of failures in a Chinese lab.”
The origin of the COVID-19 virus has become a focal point of contention as tensions between the U.S. and China as the U.S. pandemic deaths pass 66,000.
While stopping short of claiming the virus was man-made, Pompeo said he agrees with the report issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that ruled out the point of origin being the “wet markets” of Wuhan.
The White House has intensified President Trump’s criticism of Beijing and demanded answers as to the origin of the virus. President Trump accused “some” U.S. television networks of being “Chinese puppets” in repeating China’s narrative that it is not responsible for the pandemic.
Pompeo added, “The Chinese Communist Party continues to block access to … the world’s best scientists, to figure out exactly what happened.”
