By the majority of his supporters, Bernie Sanders is seen as a champion of the middle and lower class. It comes with some degree of confusion, then, why Sen. Sanders so vehemently opposes President Trump’s efforts to help out the middle class by drastically lowering their taxes.
In a CNN debate featuring Republicans Ted Cruz and Tim Scott as well as Democrat Maria Cantwell and Independent Bernie Sanders, a veteran and Trump supporter from the audience was given the opportunity to ask Sen. Sanders directly why he opposes these efforts to lower taxes on the middle class. His answer, unsurprisingly, fell right in line with the Democrats’ main talking point on the GOP tax plan – it only helps out the rich.
Of course, the GOP tax plan cuts taxes for everyone across the board, but the fact that it happens to also cut taxes for those in the upper class seems to be what Democrats have latched onto as a reason for their opposition. As Sen. Cruz points out in the debate, though, Sen. Sanders isn’t just in opposition of lowering taxes on the upper class; the truth is that he wants to raise taxes on everyone, middle and lower class included.
