An appeals court in New York has struck down the unprecedented $515 million civil fraud judgment against President Donald Trump, his family, and his company — a ruling that delivers a major blow to Attorney General Letitia James’s politically charged case.

The appellate panel found that the penalty imposed by Judge Arthur Engoron amounted to “an excessive fine that violates the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution.” Legal experts note this is a rare and significant rebuke, underscoring how extraordinary the original ruling truly was.

From the outset, James made no secret of her intentions. She campaigned for office on the promise of targeting Trump personally, a vow that blurred the line between the impartial administration of justice and political score-settling. Judge Engoron, who presided over the trial, repeatedly drew scrutiny for rulings and comments that suggested bias rather than neutrality.

Trump hailed the appellate decision, writing: “TOTAL VICTORY in the FAKE New York State Attorney General Letitia James Case! I greatly respect the fact that the Court had the Courage to throw out this unlawful and disgraceful Decision that was hurting Business all throughout New York State.”

He added that the case was a “political witch hunt, in a business sense, the likes of which no one has ever seen before,” pointing out that the timing and scale of the penalty appeared aimed at crippling both his businesses and his candidacy.

That narrative is hard to ignore. Democrats seized on the original ruling in the run-up to the 2024 election to cast Trump as a criminal and undermine his campaign. With the appellate court now tossing out the judgment, the effort looks more like weaponized lawfare than legitimate oversight.

Still, Attorney General James has vowed to continue pursuing the case, promising to “appeal the appeal” to “protect the rights and interests of New Yorkers.” But critics argue this persistence reveals the true aim of her office: not safeguarding the public, but grinding down a political opponent at all costs.
