Trump is Ruining the Left’s Imagined Struggle

Struggle and victimhood are powerful forms of currency for the modern left. Enduring struggles and fighting to end those struggles for one’s self and others is something that gives many people a sense of purpose and importance in life. In 2019 America, though, there are few battles left to be won.

Today, there is no unfair legislation or oppressive power structures that must be overturned as there was in the days of the civil rights movement or the days of women’s suffrage. In spite of all the doom and gloom portrayed by the media since Trump took office, no groups of Americans have suffered under his administration. In fact, we’ve all benefited quite a lot so far.

This lack of struggle has forced the left to invent their own, new battles to wage and win. It simply isn’t possible for some people to accept that everything is alright with their world and no horrible injustices are taking place. This has led the left to meticulously search for new “injustices” to stand against, and this search has led them to some very bizarre places.

For the left, victimhood is an identity and an essential part of their political culture. When there no more real-world monsters left to destroy, though, many on the left turn to tilting at windmills.
