Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is once again under fire for inflammatory rhetoric — this time for personally insulting President Donald Trump during a political rally in Arizona.
Speaking to the crowd, Crockett claimed that “the Supreme Court has paved the way for half the stuff that we see that’s going on,” before launching into a direct attack on the president:
“Listen, Donald Trump is a piece of sh*t. Okay, we know that! Yes, he is! He is!”
She went on to accuse House and Senate Republicans, as well as the Supreme Court, of being “complicit” in what she described as Trump’s ability to “get away with this.”
Crockett’s remarks raise serious questions about the level of discourse coming from members of Congress and the precedent it sets for elected officials openly disparaging the president of the United States in such terms.
Her comments are also notable for their hypocrisy: while claiming to stand for “functioning democracy,” she leveled unsubstantiated accusations of corruption at the nation’s highest court — a cornerstone of that very democracy.
Critics have also pointed out that while Crockett represents a district in Texas, she spent her weekend more than a thousand miles away at a partisan rally, raising questions about her priorities and commitment to serving her constituents.
Her political future may also become more uncertain. With redistricting looming in Texas, Crockett could soon find herself running in a far more competitive district than the solidly Democratic one she currently represents.
