The United Kingdom’s Daily Mail reports that Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared today the “UK’s tactics will shift from ‘containing’ the killer disease to merely ‘delaying’ its inevitable spread.”
One thing is certain, President Trump’s reaction to the crisis has differed vastly from Johnson’s.
Johnson defended what has been up till now been a ‘wait and see’ approach to the pandemic saying: “At all stages, we have been guided by the science. We will do the right thing at the right time.”
He previously told older people in the U.K. to prepare to stay at home for the next four months, but that everyone else should go about their businesses since reports are that younger people don’t get hit by the virus as badly.
The UK’s government is still allowing all sports matches to continue with the PM stressing that the most ‘draconian’ measures should not be triggered too early.
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon decided that time has already come and said that large gatherings will be canceled. She said that it is “inappropriate that we continue as normal.”
England’s medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, agreed with Sturgeon saying this pandemic is “something which will interfere with their lives and interfere with their work and their social life in quite significant ways.” However, Professor Whitty added, “we do not think this is the right moment along the pandemic to do so. But that point will come.”
The U.K.’s approach to coronavirus is vastly different than how the US and President Trump is responding. President Trump is taking this outbreak very seriously and is offering relief bills, cancelling schools, banning large gatherings, shutting down all sporting events, etc.
