With former Vice President Joe Biden’s official endorsement of progressives’ Green New Deal, many Republicans realize they must offer more to confront its dangers than a simple, “We’re against it.”
The American Conservation Coalition (ACC) was started by college Republicans as a nonprofit with a mission to “empower conservatives to re-engage on environmental conversations.”
As Zoya Teirstein of Grist notes, these Republicans are taking a different approach to fend off what conservatives see as the “disastrous ideas” of the left with its proposal to “transition the United States economy from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and enact a host of social justice policies along the way.”
Quillan Robinson, the vice president of government affairs for ACC, said, “We don’t think that there is a silver bullet approach to climate change, so there’s not a laundry list of policy things that we can do that, if we check all those off, climate change will be solved.”
The group is calling for a commonsense approach to solving the current and future energy problems that face this country. For example, while endorsing the government’s investment in American-made electric vehicles to help developing countries to global emissions, the ACC also endorses a renewed emphasis on nuclear energy and “clean coal.”
