The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this week that it has set new guidelines for its Best Picture Nominees. And the new guidelines couldn’t be more racist.
Four new standards any movie who wants to win an Oscar for Best Picture include having a minimum level of minorities in the cast and subject matter of the film. That means that movies about the Irish mafia like The Departed or The Irishman must include black and brown people now in the cast.
Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson issued a joint statement saying, “We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry.”
There have been multiple campaigns targeting the dominance of films about white characters and white actors following past Oscar’s Best Picture nominee lists.
Progressives are applauding this year’s history making Oscar winner. The film “Parasite,” produced by South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-is the first international film in the Academy’s history to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
Twitter users kicked off the campaign for “more inclusiveness” in Hollywood with the hashtag “#OscarsSoWhite” in 2015 after the slate of 20 best actor nominees for that year’s best picture included only whites.
Actress Issa Rae appended her announcement of the nominees for Best Director that excluded women, saying, “Congratulations to those men.”
