Who is Gary Cohn? Talk going around Washington is that Cohn, the White House National Economic Council (WHNEC) director and chief economic advisor to President Trump, is one of the leaders of a tightly knit clique surrounding the president, led by Trump’s young son-in-law Jared Kushner.
As you might know, Kushner is a real estate magnate unto himself at the mere age of 36, who happens to be married to Trump’s daughter and sometime presidential advisor Ivanka Trump. Observers of this White House faction have taken to labeling it “the New York liberal set” within the White House, not just for its geographic origins, but also for its political viewpoints.
For instance, Cohn, who until this year was the president and COO of global investment bank Goldman Sachs, is on record as being a registered Democrat — not a Republican. He’s also known to be pro-business, pro-regulation and more than just a bit of a globalist.
At the same time, members of this White House clique have avoided publicity, aiming to keep a low-profile even as they court the president’s ear more effectively than the people identified with Trump’s original campaign, such as White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Senior Counselor Kellyanne Conway.
It’s been rumored that White House Senior Advisor Stephen Miller, who many people say was at least partially responsible for the president’s tremendously well-received inaugural address in January, has “switched camps” and now appears to be allied with the group led by Kushner and Cohn, as opposed to the one led by Bannon and Priebus.
Will Kushner and Cohn end up dominating the White House and influencing President Trump at the expense (and possible dismissal) of Bannon and Priebus? Watch as Fox News’ Chris Wallace offers his expert opinion on this timely controversy.
