What do you believe lies at the heart of differences between conservatives and liberals? Some would name leading issues, like abortion, health care, economics or border policy. Others would suggest the biggest differences stem from beliefs in religion and/or science. Still others would contest that it depends on how you view money and worth.
One of the most popular ideas is that conservatives and liberals differ on inherent self-worth. A conservative would suggest that a person has innate value, and that should be enough of a reason to work hard and earn your way through life. A liberal thinks that a person’s value is tied to their identity, and self-sufficiency can never truly exist.
Another common idea is that conservatives believe in tough love. They tell you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps because it’s better for you. Conversely, a liberal believes in a softer love. Everyone deserves help, and we should all be given all of our needs. There’s no room in the modern world for harshness.
If you look deeper, you’ll find that all of the differences really do come from a single, root disagreement. You’ll find that ultimate cause discussed in this video. It’s not a novel idea, but when you refrain all of our arguments through this lens, it makes a lot of sense.
