Minneapolis City council president, Lisa Bender revealed her ideal for a “police-free society.”
CNN host Chris Cuomo told Bender she seemed to imagine a “utopian concept where nobody’s committing any crime.” The problem with that, said Cuomo, is that as long as cities are being “preyed upon” there will have to be “good men and women willing to step up to keep people safe.”
Bender replied, “I think the idea of having a police-free future is very aspirational, and I am willing to stand with community members who are asking us to think of that as the goal.”
Earlier on CNN, Bender caused an uproar, even among liberals, when she said calling for law enforcement when your house is broken into is an example of “privilege.”
But not all in Minnesota’s largest city are thrilled about Bender’s idea. Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart reminded those who want to have a police free city, “If they choose to eliminate their police department through defunding operations … they must also choose to live with the consequences of their decisions.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he doesn’t support eliminating the city’s police force. Republican State Rep. Pat Garofalo went further, saying, “Legislators cannot sit by silently while a rogue city council drives our state into anarchy.”
