Stephen A. Smith Gets Red-Pilled by Caller on Who’s Really Responsible for ICE Chaos

For years, Stephen A. Smith has been one of the loudest voices in sports media—and more recently, political commentary—willing to challenge both parties. But like many Democrats, Smith has long accepted one narrative without seriously interrogating it: that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is the primary source of chaos in America’s immigration debate, particularly under President Trump.

That narrative cracked—live on air.

During a recent episode of Smith’s podcast, a caller named Keith from New York calmly introduced a fact that’s been conveniently ignored by all of the media and the Left. Under previous administrations—Obama, Bush, even Clinton—ICE conducted removals routinely, at scale, and with far less public chaos. Why? One word: Cooperation.

From 2009 to 2016, the Obama administration removed roughly five million illegal immigrants. ICE arrests happened daily, often quietly, because local and state law enforcement worked with federal authorities instead of obstructing them. Jails honored detainers. Cities didn’t sabotage enforcement. Politicians didn’t encourage resistance.

Keith’s point landed hard.

Smith openly acknowledged something few Democratic commentators are willing to say out loud: if ICE enforcement looks chaotic today, it may not be because of Trump at all. It may be because sanctuary city officials, Democrat leaders like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frye and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and progressive groups who train and pay people to protest, have deliberately chosen confrontation over cooperation—specifically to create ugly optics and pin the blame on President Trump and Republicans. We must remember this is an election year.

That realization forced Smith into an uncomfortable but honest fork in the road. Either Trump is acting outside the law—or local and state officials are actively impeding the execution of federal law. There isn’t a third option.

And Smith did something rare in modern media: he followed the logic where it led.

He admitted that if left-wing officials are intentionally blocking ICE to manufacture chaos and outrage—especially to hurt the Trump administration—then the real problem isn’t federal enforcement. It’s political sabotage. That’s not a conservative talking point. That’s basic rule-of-law reasoning.

Smith was clear he still doesn’t trust Trump personally. But he was even clearer about something more important: no mayor, governor, or city council gets to nullify federal law because they don’t like who’s in the White House. That kind of selective enforcement erodes the country, hurts working-class communities, and disproportionately harms Black Americans who pay the price for lawlessness.

This wasn’t a viral rant. It was a real-time red pill.

If you want to watch Stephen A. Smith rethink the entire ICE “chaos” narrative live—based on facts, not slogans—make sure to watch the clip. It’s rare to see someone cross the mental line in public. And it’s worth your time.
