Thousands of Minneapolis residents are now under occupation in the George Floyd autonomous zone that locals describe as a war zone—right in the streets of a major American city.
Neighbors say they are experiencing a revolution by day and a de-evolution at night. Prayer gatherings, rallies and people arriving with flowers are cancelled as people retreat to their cars at the sound of gunshots.
Witnesses report in the last 10 days, police have been met by hostiles when responding to 911 calls. A 30-year-old volunteer was shot and killed in the zone. People can be seen picking up shell casings to throw into garbage bags. Six garages in the nearby alley were hit by gunfire.
This is not supposed to be George Floyd’s legacy, nor is this a good way to honor his life. There is nothing peaceful about living in a war zone where outsiders are made to feel unwelcome. The autonomous zone has become the last place a peaceful person wants to enter, abandoning the neighborhood to vigilantes who care nothing for ending discrimination.
