The move for news outlets to refuse to carry President Trump’s daily COVID-19 press conferences came into sharp focus this week as he chastised a CNN reporter on live TV for spreading “fake news.”
Ironically, Free Press, which purports to be a “non-partisan organization fighting for your rights to connect and communicate,” sided with liberals. The Free Press’ Jessica J. González tweeted:
At @freepress we aren’t just calling on people to #BoycottTrumpPressConferences, we think broadcasters ought to refrain from airing them too. To air Trump’s dangerous lies and #misinformation without disclaimer goes against public interest and violates the broadcast hoax rule.
But a “free” press should report the whole truth and not cherry-pick what suits its anti-Trump narrative. Free Press apparently forgot that Trump called the reporter’s network “fake news” because the reporter cut off a quote without giving its full context, making the quote seem misleading and seemingly changing its meaning.
President Trump said, “You cut it off because it’s fake news CNN. You know the answer’s a lie. … and your response and your answer is a lie.”
Part of the reason #BoycottTrumpPressConferences reached 40,000 tweets after the news conference is because of President Trump’s refusal to allow bad reporting go unchallenged.
As Roberto Wakerell-Cruz of The Post Millennial wrote, “It’s no wonder that so many in the mainstream media, who are hoping for him to lose the upcoming election, are not enjoying his vigilance in the face of the coronavirus crisis.”
