Let’s be honest for a minute. President Trump is a character. Sometimes he’s harsh. Sometimes he’s completely charming. He can be everything in between, and he often caters his demeanor to the task at hand. A press conference rarely looks the same as a rally, and neither have much in common with an international summit. Because of that diversity in his presentation, there are plenty of clips that require little analysis. We don’t have to read too deeply into a “build the wall” chant. The speech in this video is quite the opposite. It’s filled to the brim with meaning and purpose, and knowing some of that going in can help you get the most from it.
This starts by considering Trump’s agenda. He was more transparent in his campaign than any president in modern history. He laid out his points, and he has attacked each one. Obviously, some issues were resolved more easily than others, but for half of a term, he’s outperforming all expectations. Some of the items checked off the list are ISIS, tax reform, deregulation, job growth, wage growth, international trade deals and dozens of other items.
There are still three big things that can’t get a full checkmark. While Obamacare has been mostly gutted, we haven’t seen the level of reform we hoped to by now. Trump also talked big on infrastructure. So far, that’s been a non-starter. Lastly, we have no new wall. Some building has taken place, but no one is satisfied with its progress.
Keep in mind how controversial these topics are. In this speech, Trump is going to admit excitement that he’ll be working with a Democratic House. That’s no small thing. It’s also only one of several major indicators in this speech. Think about the three issues when you watch.
