Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla recently appeared on host Lex Fridman’s podcast, and the two discussed whether all the money Pfizer spends on advertising has an impact on the kind of coverage the company and its products receive. Bourla’s responses were telling, although not in the way either he or the host probably intended.
Jimmy and comedian Kurt Metzger discuss this unintentionally hilarious interview on the latest episode of “The Jimmy Dore Show.”
Jimmy notes that Pfizer literally sponsors CBS News. The interview is like asking your boss to tell you how great the company is. Of course the boss is going to brag about the company and say everything is great. Pfizer’s CEO is raking in huge profits off of its dominance in vaccine development. They have no reason to criticize the news media that they have partnered with to promote their products.
If Bourla’s claim that money doesn’t influence news was true, his company wouldn’t be spending money on sponsoring news shows. The fact that his company does reveals they believe there is influence there that will help them as a brand.
Jimmy shows multiple examples of “brought to you by Pfizer” that include CNN, Early Start, Friday Night, Aaron Burnett Out Front, This Week with George Stephanopoulos and more. Pfizer has invested heavily in news media because they believe it helps. Taking an interview and saying the direct opposite is one the strangest twists by Big Pharma yet.
