Reports have emerged out of China that the government has brought back their authoritarian COVID restrictions on their citizens in an effort to contain an outbreak of a mosquito-borne illness known as the Chikungunya virus.
Foshan is a manufacturing hub in southern China that sits just about 100 miles from the much more populous Hong Kong, one of the most active shipping ports in the world.
Are we really about to see ANOTHER pandemic come out of China?!
The CCP was quick to roll out the same kinds of authoritarian lockdown measures they enacted during COVID. Officials are forcing residents to quarantine inside their home for two weeks. This decision is even more strange considering the virus reportedly can’t be transmitted between people.
On top of that, they’ve also been sending suited up officials into people’s homes to check for stagnant water, dousing people with insecticide against their will, and flying drones overhead to spy on residents to ensure they are complying with the new rules.
Government officials reportedly have already cut off electricity to households they have deemed to not be complying adequately enough with their rules and inspections. Citizens have reported being harassed by police to comply with the new rules. Users on the Chinese social app Rednote accused officers of excessive enforcement and intimidation tactics.
Any of this sounding familiar?
During the Covid pandemic police welded residents doors shut to keep them from going outside, health officials in hazmat suits patrolled the streets, and residents were rationed food. These kids of draconian policies became a global symbol of authoritarian public health enforcement—and they’re starting to resurface, just under a different name.
Just because these lockdowns are happening on the other side of the world, Americans should not become complacent, thinking our own officials won’t lock us down again. All it would take is to declare a state of emergency and we’d be right back where we were in 2020.
