New Jersey Governor Shuts Down Gun, Ammo Stores, Says They Are “Nonessential Business”

AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News reports New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has ordered a statewide shutdown order for all “non-essential” businesses in the state. Murphy added guns to his list of what law-abiding citizens don’t need during these trying times.

Federal guidelines give state authorities a lot of latitude in what they deem “essential” businesses during a time of emergency. According to USA Today, “In general such orders include grocery stores and food production, pharmacies, health care, utilities, shipping, banking, other governmental services, law enforcement, emergency services, and news outlets.”

Murphy ensured no one can purchase a weapon in his state by having the state’s web page that contains the federal firearms license form (FFL) removed from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) system.

The following message now appears on that page:

On Saturday, March 21, 2020, Governor Phil Murphy announced he is putting New Jersey in lockdown to combat the spread of coronavirus … The New Jersey State Police NICS Unit is directing the vendor of the NICS Online Application (NICUSA) to turn off the NICS Online Services for submitting NICS transactions by eliminating the “Request Form” button, effective 9:00 pm EST, Saturday, March 21, 2020.

The order makes it impossible to legally purchase a firearm in the state for an unspecified amount of time.
