NBC Anchor Asks Sen. Tim Scott How It Feels to be the “Token” Black in the Republican Party

We usually don’t have very much material to share with viewers of NBC/MSNBC anchor Craig Melvin. He’s too much of a dud to make outlandish gaffes like the other team of weirdoes at the “peacock” network. But every once in a while, Melvin, who happens to be black, makes an outlandish statement that causes us to remember that Craig Melvin is a person who works at NBC/MSNBC.

Back in 2009, for example, Craig Melvin was unable to tell some prominent black people apart on an NBC News segment. Melvin complained that five members of the House Black Congressional Congress were under ethics investigations and claimed that this was racism even though Democrats were in control of the House at the time. While proclaiming the innocence of Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (who later went to prison for those ethics investigations), NBC News was showing a picture of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Senior the whole time. Whoops. Perhaps they all looked the same to him?

Most of the time we just don’t have many clips to show you of Craig Melvin, however, because he is simply so unimpressive and his viewership numbers are so incredibly low. But whenever he puts his foot in his mouth, boy does he put his foot in his mouth!

While talking about criminal justice reform this week with Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Craig Melvin asks the Republican Senator how it feels to be the “token black” of the GOP. Watch this clip for Tim Scott’s elegant response, and for a reminder that Craig Melvin is a person who works at NBC/MSNBC.
