When 83-year-old Orin Hatch, the longest-serving Republican senator in history, announced his decision to not run for an eighth term as Senator of Utah, Mitt Romney was quick to do what many had expected for quite some time. Romney announced his intention to run for Senate.
When asked by reporters for his comments about Romney’s announcement President Trump said, “Mitt’s a good man.” While Trump endorses Romney publicly it is not with much fervor. The Associated Press reports that Trump’s private views are far more pronounced. He hopes to block Romney because he views him as a potential thorn in his side, and for good reason.
In his favor, Romney would be reliable on confirming conservative judges and advancing most GOP policy priorities. But on a personal level, he has consistently proven he does not support the President.
Lis Smith, a Democratic strategist, describes Romney as “NeverTrump before NeverTrump was cool,” and she believes his stature would allow him to take Trump on in a way that many Republicans can’t.
Some Democrats even welcome the prospect of a Senator Romney. National Review editor Rich Lowry reports that Congressman Seth Moulton (Dem. – MA) told him “the president should be scared” of Romney.”
