NYC Mayor Threatens to Raise Taxes on Homeowners After Campaigning to Make City More Affordable for Residents. Is It Too Early to Say We Told You So?

New Yorkers, brace yourselves, because Mayor Zohran Mamdani is ready to hit you with a hefty property tax hike—9.5%, to be exact—if his plan to squeeze more cash out of the wealthy doesn’t get approved by Governor Kathy Hochul. This is the kind of news that has everyone from Wall Street moguls to average Joe homeowners in a tizzy. It’s the sort of proposal that will make you wonder if you should start taking up residence in your neighbor’s basement to dodge the taxman.

Mamdani, with a flair for dramatics, presented this tax hike as a “last resort” during his preliminary spending plan speech. He threw out some big numbers: more than three million single-family homes, co-ops, and condos, and over 100,000 commercial buildings would be in the crosshairs. And let’s not mince words here—this isn’t just a slap on the wrist for the rich. Nope, it’s a gut punch for hardworking New Yorkers who are already grappling with an expensive city life.

The mayor did admit that his hands are somewhat tied. New York City mayors don’t have much authority on their own to jack up taxes without a nod from the governor and the state legislature. Unfortunately, the city’s budget deficit is looming large at $5.4 billion over the next two years, and Mamdani feels cornered into using the “painful” tool of property tax hikes to fill that gap.

As much as Mamdani may want to avoid this path, it seems he’s ready to raid the city’s reserve funds and make every homeowner’s wallet a little lighter. However, Governor Hochul hinted that this doomsday scenario might not come to pass, as the June 30 city budget deadline approaches.

Perhaps this is a lesson New Yorkers just need to learn the hard way.
