Former Governor Jerry Brown of California signed a law in 2017 that will move his state’s presidential primary election from March to June in 2020, giving Democratic candidates an earlier chance at capturing the just short of 500 delegates of that state.
But Representative Maxine Waters says she wants more clout in who become the Democratic nominee. She argues that California, the nation’s most populous state with nearly 40 million residents, is being slighted when it comes to influencing which of the Democratic candidates is chosen to carry her party’s banner against President Trump.
Waters told CNBC on Thursday, “A lot of people have come to the conclusion that it should not simply be Iowa and New Hampshire, that certainly they are not reflective of the makeup of this country. And so, California has a role to play.”
By her logic, she contends that since the California rich supply national candidates with “tremendous dollars”, the state “ought to have more say” in who gets her party’s nod.
Ironically, the California congresswoman’s remarks come at the same time Democratic Party faithful accuse New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg of “buying” the nomination.
No wonder progressive candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders who leads in four major California polls is looking forward to an early California primary.
