Largely in an effort to undermine President Trump’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, officials in sanctuary cities have begun taking the law into their own hands with increasing frequency. Examples of this range from officials refusing to enforce immigration laws to tipping off illegal immigrants that an ICE raid was about to be conducted. Now, though, there’s an act making its way through Congress that could deliver severe consequences to any official who sides with lawbreakers rather than the laws they swore to uphold.
The Libby Schaaf Act dictates that any official guilty of obstructing immigration enforcement -whether they are inside a sanctuary city or not – will be subject to a punishment of five years in jail. The act is named after the now-infamous Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf who tipped off illegal immigrants that an ICE raid was about to be conducted and enabled an estimated 800 illegals – some of which were guilty of rape and murder – to avoid authorities.
For too long, officials in sanctuary cities have been able to ignore and undermine federal law without any sort of consequence. If the Libby Schaaf Act passes, though, they will finally be held accountable for these actions.
