It’s time for a quick history lesson! In extremist, fanatical, destructive regimes of the past, which side burned books? Was it the followers of the moderate Heinrich Bruning, or the Brownshirts who were violent against the idea of discourse? In Mao’s cultural revolution, who slaughtered the scholars who simply wanted to hold public discussions?
You know the answer to these questions, and there’s a reason to revisit history.
In modern America, we mostly have two factions. One faction tries hard to engage in rigorous debate in order to prevent society from making dangerous mistakes. The other side engages in cancel and outrage culture. They scream over talkers and violently attack people for the crime of disagreement.
History makes it painfully clear why this particular distinction is so important. Only violent tyrants need to fear opposing ideas. Anyone with a good idea can afford to let their opposition be heard, because the public isn’t fooled by extremely stupid ideas.
This is the entire purpose of outrage culture. You have to shout down the proof that you’re wrong.
This brings us to the video below. It’s disturbing footage, but it’s frustratingly normal. These are violent, leftist students on a college campus who can’t tolerate the peaceful exchange of ideas.
When you watch, think about history. Decide for yourself which side resembles the genocidal regimes of an all-too-recent past.
