Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Chastises Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Plan to Pack the Courts, Calls It a “Bad Idea,” “Partisan”

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg recently commented in an NPR interview on Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling for expanding the Supreme Court and her answer to adding six more justices to the court probably isn’t what progressives expected from their hero.

Since they failed to stand in the way of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh’s nomination, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) and his counterpart Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) say it’s time to pursue balancing the Supreme Court

There is nothing in the Constitution that states how many justices should be on the high court. The first Supreme Court had six seats and remained that way until 1869.

The Washington Post suggested last year the best course of action would be to expand the size of the Supreme Court. The paper also called for what both parties have long refused to acknowledge — make the court political by purposefully appointing ideologically opposed justices.

Democrats have also proposed ending the lifetime terms of Supreme Court justices along with changes in the tenures of judges on lower federal benches.

During his second term, President Franklin D. Roosevelt floated a similar trial balloon, but his opponents quickly shot it down. As Amity Shales work, The Forgotten Man shows — even the average Roosevelt supporter didn’t want that kind of power in one man’s hands.
