The right for parents to make moral decisions about what is best for their child is a fundamental aspect of preserving the family unit and individual liberty. Unfortunately, like many of our rights, the right for a parent to decide what is best for their child is eroding away at a dizzying rate.
In Ohio, one judge ruled that the parents of a 17 year-old girl who is suffering from gender dysphoria would lose custody of their daughter because they refused to allow her to undergo sex reassignment surgery and hormone treatment. Instead, custody was granted to the grandparents, who reportedly intend to allow the teenager to undergo the operation.
If the court has the ability to take a child away from their parents because of a moral decision the parents make on the child’s behalf, there is no more such thing as parental rights in this country. The day when children are able to petition the courts – and win – because they don’t agree with their parents’ decisions is apparently upon us, and there’s no telling what could come next. Legal decisions such as this are deeply threatening to the preservation of the family unit in this country, and, as history has shown us before, when the family unit goes down, so does the country itself.
