The Federal Communications System (FCC) fined ABC almost $400,000 for Jimmy Kimmel’s Trump Alert Sketch that used the emergency alert system (EAS) tone.
The tone is reserved by the Federal Government for broadcast by radio, TV, and other devices to alert Americans of emergencies that entail national disasters.
Other TV shows such as The Walking Dead were also fined for the violation but the use of it in Kimmel’s sketch is most troubling to many.
The October 3, 2018, Kimmel show used the tone three times after 225 million electronic devices across the U.S. received the “Presidential Alert” that read “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System ….”
Kimmel continually ridicules Trump on his light-night show, but the use of the EAS code crosses the line of comedic entertainment. The FCC said in a statement, “We remain concerned about the misuse of the EAS codes and EAS and WEA Attention Signals … to capture audience attention … [when] there is no genuine alert.”
When President Trump announced the alerts would be tweeted as well as existing methods, the left suggested he might be too erratic to trust using the EAC alert. Kimmel echoed that to get laughs on his show.
