John Kasich – a 2016 Presidential candidate who largely ran on the platform of “can’t we all just get along?” and who was thrashed by Donald Trump in the Republican primary – is still plenty bitter about his defeat. However, in an interview where he spent much of the time criticizing his party’s President, Kasich did manage to bring up a very interesting point about the two party system in the United States.
According to Kasich, we may be witnessing the beginning of the end for the two party system which dictates that if you want to hold office, you have to have either a “D” or an “R” in front of your name.
Right now, the divide between the Democratic and Republican parties is so pronounced that many Americans are left feeling disenfranchised, unable to completely side with either party. Add to this the fact that there are already numerous factions within both parties (for example, the socialist wing of the Democratic party headed by politicians such as Bernie Sanders and the libertarian wing of the Republican party headed by politicians such as Rand Paul) and you have the formula in place for the beginning of a multi-party system in America.
Right now, the two party system is entrenched in American politics. However, according to Kasich, this might not be the case in the future. To hear Kasich’s explanation for why he thinks the two party system is starting to unravel, be sure to check out the video below.
