Is #BootGate the End of the Humorless Ron DeSantis Campaign?

The people running the Ron DeSantis for President campaign have managed in just five months to transform the most popular Republican governor in the country into the punchline of the 2024 election.

It didn’t have to be this way. If the DeSantis campaign staffers had a sense of humor or if they were capable of behaving like decent human beings, at least his reputation wouldn’t be in shambles like it is now because of #BootGate.

Several videos of Ron DeSantis in weird cowboy boots made people speculate that maybe he’s wearing hidden high heels, to make himself look taller. This was initially just internet banter. The only way to successfully deal with something like that when it happens is to embrace it and joke about it.

If you throw a fit and start attacking people over a joke—which is what the DeSantis campaign did—then you are the one who makes it a big deal. You turn yourself into an automatic internet meme by being humorless.

 

Remember in 2016 when President Trump revealed Lindsay Graham’s cellphone number to the world? Graham responded correctly by smashing his cellphone with a golf club. That’s all you can do. Embrace it and joke about it, otherwise you appear weak.

The DeSantis campaign has been so defensive about #BootGate that the Trump campaign is now calling him “Rhonda Santis.” It’s that bad.

We need a strong president to carry us forward, who has done that before, Donald Trump.
