That’s telling ’em!
Eddie Baza Calvo, the governor of the U.S. territory of Guam, is no shrinking violet. After North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s foolish and belligerent threats toward the United States, President Trump stated that North Korea would be “met with fire and fury like the world has never seen” if it continued its hard-headed antagonism.
In this clip, Calvo confirms he’s 100 percent behind Trump’s remarks and backs the president all the way in terms of defense and potential retaliatory action should the rogue nation execute a first strike. This is important because, even though Guam is a United States territory — not a state — it’s still a sovereign possession of the U.S., and any attack on it would be looked upon identically to an assault on the American homeland from a foreign relations perspective.
Calvo reiterates that there are both U.S. troops stationed on Guam (the island functions as the main airfield for our B-2 and B-52 bombers west of Hawaii) as well as more than 100,000 U.S. citizens living there. Not only is the island a strategic base for our military, it’s an important link in our Pacific supply chain for aircraft, naval vessels, submarines and missile defenses.
A North Korean attack on Guam — even if it were only partially successful — would be as or more devastating than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II. If nuclear weapons were used (for instance, if they were put atop the four Hwasong-12 missiles North Korea has been threatening to fire), the destruction and chaos that would ensue would be unparalleled and would without question lead to the utter annihilation of Kim Jong Un’s country and regime. On August 14, Secretary of Defense James Mattis confirmed this in no uncertain terms. Perhaps this is why, for now, Kim Jong Un has chosen to back down from the strike with four missiles his nation was planning for mid-August.
Watch as Governor Calvo stands up for his island and for President Trump’s forceful remarks.
