Election Analysis: Voter Turnout for Trump v Romney

If you have been listening to the national media over the last several months, you probably recall most outlets stating that if voter turnout is high, it likely means bad news for Donald Trump. After all, if voter turnout is high it means more minorities are going to vote for Democrats.

Well, experts were wrong about this, just like they were wrong about nearly every other aspect of the presidential election. Voter turnout went up 4.5 percent in this election over the past election. Additionally, people who traditionally are seen as a Democratic demographic voted for Donald Trump this go around.

When comparing individual counties throughout the United States, Donald out performed Mitt Romney in almost every single county by a percentage spot or two. These handful of percentage spots may not seem like much, but when spread across an entire state, it leads to states swinging towards Donald.

It is why he ended up winning major states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. These three states alone are 46 electoral votes, and at the beginning of the night, most expected Hillary Clinton to win all three.

So not only did voter turnout end up helping Republicans, but Donald ended up doing better than most previous Republican candidates.
