Ecuador Ended Julian Assange’s Asylum to Improve Ties with the U.S.

Considered by some to be a national hero and others an arm of the Russian government, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange played a critical in helping expose Hillary Clinton’s scandals and crimes during the 2016 election. Aside from James Comey, it’s difficult to point to a single person who had more influence in helping Donald Trump get elected than Julian Assange.

However, there’s also no denying that Assange broke the law in the process.

After fleeing all over the world in order to avoid prosecution in the United States and other countries, Assange eventually ended up taking asylum in Ecuador’s London embassy. As a nation that prides itself on hospitality, the Ecuadorian government reportedly spent over $1 million per year to protect and house Assange inside the embassy. Now, though, Ecuador has recently chosen to end Julian Assange’s asylum.

While various reasons for why Ecuador ended Assange’s asylum have been offered, it seems likely that it may have been a strategic move to improve relations with the United States. Though the Trump administration has not made Assange’s extradition a priority, there are plenty of elements within the US government that would love nothing more than to see Julian Assange brought back to the United States to answer for his crimes.
