Democrats won the House on Tuesday night, and Rep. Robert Garcia had two posts ready to go.
The first was written for the brochure. Garcia, the California Democrat in line to chair the House Oversight Committee, promised to "take on corruption and make life more affordable for working families."
That one got about 17,000 views.
The second was two words in all caps: "LAWYER UP."
That one got 6.39 million.
Garcia wasn't freelancing. The committee's Democratic account posted the same two words. Sen. Ed Markey joked that they'd need to plant new forests for all the subpoenas they'll be printing. Democratic operative Scott Dworkin went straight to the Supreme Court and reminded everyone that "the new Congress can impeach" Chief Justice John Roberts.
The votes weren't even all counted yet. As of Wednesday afternoon, Democrats had won 242 House seats to Republicans' 146, with 47 races still uncalled. Projections have Democrats finishing around 258. They've flipped 35 seats so far in a House Republicans controlled 219 to 214 going in.
The Senate went the same way. Democrats have at least 54 seats to Republicans' 44, with Alaska and Mississippi still out. They flipped seats in Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, South Carolina, North Carolina and Maine, where Susan Collins lost.
Garcia takes the gavel when the new Congress is sworn in on January 3. Oversight is the House's main investigative committee. It can subpoena documents, force testimony, and hold officials in contempt of Congress. The committee hasn't held a single organizational meeting yet, and its next chairman has already told you what those powers are for.
The country has plenty for a serious committee to work on. Families are still feeling gas prices and grocery bills, and the supply chains for critical minerals still run through China. Any one of those could fill a chairman's first hundred days. Garcia went with a threat.
The motive isn't hard to figure out. Democrats have lost the White House to Trump twice. They spent the last four years in the House minority watching Republicans investigate the Biden administration. Now it's their turn, and Garcia wants everyone to know the meter's running.
The 2028 race is part of it too. Election Day 2028 is 735 days away, JD Vance is the presumptive Republican frontrunner, and a Democratic bench running from Josh Shapiro to Gavin Newsom is already auditioning. Prime-time hearings with Trump officials in the witness chair make great audition tape.
We've seen this before. Democrats won the House in 2018 and had the investigations rolling within weeks. They impeached Trump in December 2019 over a phone call, and the Senate acquitted him. They impeached him again in January 2021, and the Senate acquitted him again. Trump came back and won in 2024.
If Garcia thinks "LAWYER UP" will rattle anyone, he's late. Trump has been under congressional investigation for most of a decade. His legal teams are already in place, and his administration has had two years to get ready for exactly this. Trump World lawyered up around 2015 and never stopped.
Republicans still hold the White House and the veto pen. Garcia has a gavel, a subpoena pad and a two-word plan.
His affordability post is still up too. Last we checked, it was sitting at about 17,000 views.
