One of the biggest disappointments through the whole saga of President-Elect Trump’s transition team was seeing the way that former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was railroaded out of serving as the next Attorney General.
No one was more qualified for the position than Gaetz. The Florida congressman was so serious about taking on the role that he immediately resigned from his House seat.
We’ve extensively covered the bogus “ethics” complaint against Gaetz, so there’s no point in covering that ground again. Kevin McCarthy’s allies kept that fake complaint alive as a form of revenge and not because it had any merit to it.
The House rules have always maintained that if a member resigns, any ethics complaints against them are not publicly released. That has applied to Republicans and Democrats. Yet Democrats this week are calling to violate that rule and release the report on Gaetz anyway.
Gaetz is no longer in consideration for Attorney General, but they want to punish him anyway. The ethics complaint will contain salacious accusations against Gaetz, but there’s no truth to it. The Justice Department investigated these claims years ago and found that Gaetz did nothing wrong!
