Shortly after the release of the now famous FISA memo which outlined the various ways the DOJ, FBI, and Obama administration abused their power and mishandled the Russian collusion investigation, Democrats promised that a rebuttal memo would be forthcoming. That memo is now out, however, the most shocking thing about the Democrats’ rebuttal memo isn’t what it says but rather what it doesn’t say.
By far the biggest bombshell from the FISA memo was the allegation that the FBI used the Steele Dossier – a flawed piece of opposition research – in order to obtain FISA warrants on members of Trump’s campaign, specifically Carter Page. Interestingly enough, this is an allegation that the rebuttal to the FISA memo does not address at all.
The rebuttal memo’s silence on this major point is deafening. In spite of promising that everything within the FISA memo could be explained away, Democrats were unable to provide even one justification for a why a piece of opposition research paid for by the DNC and Clinton campaign was used as the basis to launch a major investigation that included multiple wiretap warrants. This lack of even a single excuse or explanation is by far the biggest takeaway of the Democrats’ rebuttal memo.
