For years, Democrats have howled that Republicans are the real threat to “our democracy.” They’ve claimed Donald Trump’s challenges to the 2020 election were baseless, that voter fraud is a “myth,” and that it’s really Republicans undermining elections. But down in Frio County, Texas, the truth is blowing their narrative apart. Every single person arrested so far in a massive voter fraud investigation has been a Democrat.
This week, nine more individuals were indicted in an illegal vote-harvesting scheme, bringing the total to 15. The cast of characters reads like a who’s who of local Democrat politics: Manuel Medina, the Chair of the Texas State Tejano Democrats; former Dilley Mayor Mary Ann Obregon; and former Pearsall Mayor Petra Davina Trevino. Each faces charges tied to mail ballot harvesting on behalf of Democrat candidates.
The scandal first broke in May when six others were arrested, including Frio County Judge Rochelle Lozano Camacho, whose campaign slogan of “UNITY, MOVEMENT and PROGRESSION FOR FRIO COUNTY” now looks like a bad joke. Even Camacho’s sister, a county trustee, was implicated. Prosecutors allege they paid operatives thousands of dollars to collect ballots, fill out applications, and target elderly voters in Pearsall. One accomplice reportedly stuffed ballots under her shirt to avoid being caught.
It’s a classic case of projection. Democrats have screamed for years that Republicans are trying to “steal” elections—yet they’re the ones who keep getting caught doing it. They tried to smear Trump as an insurrectionist while running ballot-harvesting rackets at the local level. They claim Republicans are “destroying democracy,” while their own officials are facing felony charges for manipulating elections.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton didn’t mince words: “Elected officials who think they can cheat to stay in power will be held accountable. No one is above the law.”
So the next time Democrats start shrieking about Republican “threats” to democracy, remember this: they’re accusing others of exactly what they’re guilty of.
