Representative Adam Schiff may have inadvertently mobilized ‘on-the fence’ Republicans to end the impeachment Senate trial quickly and acquit President Trump.
During his closing argument last Friday, Schiff had everyone’s respectful attention until he cited a CBS News report that claimed a Trump confidante implied “there could be serious ramifications for Republican senators if they voted against the president.”
“CBS News reported last night that a Trump confidante said that GOP senators were warned: vote against your president … and your head will be on a pike,” Schiff said.
Senator Susan Collins of Maine reacted aloud saying, “Not true.” Other of her fellow Republican Senators joined her disgust audibly.
Collins is a moderate Republican Democrats are trying to win over. The response she and her colleagues had to Schiff’s comment is notable because Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts had warned those in the hearing room to not talk during the proceedings or face the possibility of imprisonment.
“The whole room was visibly upset on our side of it. It’s insulting and demeaning to everyone to say that we live in fear and that the president has threatened all of us,” Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma told reporters.
According to Reuters, “Republicans control the U.S. Senate and are not expected to convict and remove Trump from office.”
