CNN Turns Refugee’s Murder Into Lecture on ‘Republican Racism’

It took more than a month for CNN to even mention the brutal killing of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska. And when they finally did, thanks to Donald Trump and conservative media forcing the issue, the network didn’t focus on the crime or the failures that let it happen. Instead, they wheeled out Brian Stelter—yes, the former “Reliable Sources” host turned frequent guest—to lecture Republicans about racism.

Stelter claimed on air that outrage over Zarutska’s death was “baldly racist,” accusing conservatives of stoking fear of African Americans because the suspect is black and the victim was white. He argued that “Trump-aligned figures” had turned the story into a political symbol, while brushing aside the real problem: why a repeat violent offender with 14 prior arrests was free to begin with.

Fast-forward to the 12:15 minute mark to see Stelter’s commentary on Republicans, before watching the whole video.

This is the same Brian Stelter who spent years dismissing legitimate scandals—from Hunter Biden’s laptop to Hillary Clinton’s email server—only to admit later that “mistakes were made.” Now, instead of addressing why legacy media ignored Zarutska’s story for weeks, he scolds Republicans for daring to talk about it at all.

That’s the real sleight of hand here. The Left ignored the story until conservatives forced it onto the national stage. Only after MAGA voices on social media—and eventually Trump himself—called attention to the murder did CNN begrudgingly cover it. And even then, their spin wasn’t about justice, public safety, or holding Democrats accountable. It was about painting Republicans as the real villains for noticing the media blackout.

Social media users weren’t buying it. One wrote: “It’s not about race. It’s about the fact this violent criminal should never have been out on the streets.” Another pointed out that Stelter seemed angrier at Republicans for breaking the story than at the justice system that failed Zarutska.

This is why trust in outlets like CNN continues to sink. They refuse to grapple with the obvious—that Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies and media silence put lives in danger. Instead, they point the finger at Republicans who dared to shine a light on what they tried to hide.

In the end, the story says more about the media than about the murder itself. And once again, CNN has shown that its first instinct is to protect Democrats and smear Republicans, no matter how ugly the truth is.
