Chinese state media is ramping up its efforts to spread the ridiculous notion that the coronavirus originated in the U.S. and was brought to China by U.S. servicemen.
This follows the February 27 pronouncement by Zhong Nanshan, a pulmonologist who has made major announcements on Chinese state media that “The coronavirus first appeared in China but may not have originated in China.”
Xiao Qiang, founder of the China Digital Times and adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley’s School of Information, said, “It’s more than just some disinformation or an official narrative. It’s an orchestrated, all-out campaign by the Chinese government through every channel at a level you rarely see. It’s a counteroffensive.”
Dali Yang, professor of political science at Chicago University, observed, “The purpose is to lessen the focus on how China bungled its response. It’s a kind of blame-shifting.”
Lin Songtia, China’s ambassador to South Africa, tweeted last week that his government hoped no one would make an “issue out of this to stigmatize other countries.”
CNN and other outlets have played into China’s disinformation campaign by pounding the President for calling COVID-19 a “Chinese virus.” Democrats joined in, saying Trump’s reference to coronavirus as the “Chinese virus” or “Wuhan virus” is racist and xenophobic.
Once again, the mainstream media and many Democrats see our current national crisis as an opportunity to take down Trump.
