What happens when your support for federal government policies puts you at odds with your state government? That’s just what James Flanagan of J.K. Flanagan Construction is facing after he submitted a plan for President Donald Trump’s southern border wall, only to find that California has proposed a statute that would outlaw his state doing business with any firm also doing work on the wall.
As Flanagan tells Fox Business’ Stuart Varney, this is a perfect example of totalitarian local government; the proposed statute is an anti-business regulation that will only harm state citizens and their ability to make a living — and, by extension, their ability to pay local taxes. In many ways, this proposal is simply a way for the Golden State — which already is hurting pretty badly from a fiscal point of view — to shoot itself in the foot.
It should be noted that the Golden State, while voicing its political opposition to President Trump, has been eager to receive federal assistance for dam flooding in its northern regions, and while Democratic Governor Jerry Brown is no friend of President Trump’s, the governor has said that federal money is necessary to help residents of Yuba, Sutter and Butte counties protect themselves from future flooding.
