Boston’s Art Commission voted to remove a “controversial” statue last month. It is replica of the Washington, DC sculpture of Abraham Lincoln with a slave that was dedicated by freed slave Frederick Douglass in 1876. The liberal city officials couldn’t stomach the site of the depiction of a freed slave kneeling before Lincoln.
The original work was by Thomas Ball and is known as the “Emancipation Group.” Freed enslaved people and Black veterans of the Union Army commissioned the piece through donations, and a copy was erected in Boston, Ball’s hometown.
The statue’s removal is the latest casualty in the eastern U.S. quest to erase our country’s history by removing Confederate monuments and reminders our nation’s actual past. Only this time, the historical character wasn’t a slaveholding Confederate. According to the mayor’s office, “The decision for removal acknowledged the statue’s role in perpetuating harmful prejudices and obscuring the role of Black Americans in shaping the nation’s freedoms.”
Except, the statue is a clear testimony to our greatest president. Lincoln best understood that slavery was the true cause of the Civil War. The freed Black man in the statue is rising in gratitude. Not shown is the one legacy of the tradition of Jim Crow, prejudice, and 100 years of Democrat leaders who tried their best to destroy President Lincoln’s legacy.
So, the Orwellian trend in shaping the public’s view of U.S. history continues. What’s next? Will there be a movement to erase President Washington and Jefferson’s faces from Mount Rushmore? Too late there already is a progressive group lobbying to remove their faces from the mountain.
