Joe Biden has eluded the question of “court-packing” for months but now he says his plans “go well beyond court-packing.” Yikes!
Judging by the way Democrats have grandstanded in Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearing, Biden supporters appear to think changes to the court are a big issue.
Up until now, it hasn’t seemed like Joe Biden agreed. He told reporters last week, “You’ll know my opinion of court-packing when the election is over.”
Back in 1983, then-Senator Biden called President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan to appoint up to six additional justices so the court would be more receptive to his liberal New Deal “a dumb idea.” But Biden told voters in Iowa last year that he still opposed a plan like FDR’s saying, “I’m not prepared to go on and try to pack the court, because we’ll live to rue the day.” Seems like he’s flip flopped again!
When Democrats outraged by Senate Republicans’ decision to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the presidential election called for changes to the court, Biden was suddenly silent. This week on 60 Minutes, Biden again flip flopped, telling Norah O-Donnell, “I’ll put together a national commission [for] recommendations as to how to reform the court system because it’s getting out of whack.”
Sounds like another vague answer to get out of telling voters that you will be packing the courts should you win.

You don’t know the difference between court packing such as Roosevelt proposed and which Joe Biden called boneheaded in 1983 and filling vacancies that naturally arise via death or retirement. All 220 judges and three Supreme Courts judges were the latter. Chuck Schumer proposes the former and Joe sashays around the issue.

I live in Joe Biden’s neighborhood. I first met him at a church luncheon. I had just moved to Delaware and truthfully had no idea who he was or what he did for a living. I met him over the years both formally and informally. Truth be told, he was at one time a likable person.
