Recently, the Democratic Party has been pushing hard to expand its voter base – not by winning the hearts and minds of American voters, but by manufacturing new voter bases that didn’t exist before. Both the push to allow illegal immigrants to vote as well as the push to lower the voting age to sixteen are thinly disguised attempts to make Democrat voters out of people who were previously unable to vote.
Bernie Sanders, however, has taken this strategy to the next level by proclaiming that, if elected President, he would allow convicted felons such as child rapists and murderers to vote from prison.
Under the current law, convicted felons are unable to vote while in prison, on parole, or on probation. Two years after the completion of their supervised release, their voting rights are then restored. Under Sanders’ plan, though, these felons would never lose their voting rights, even while behind bars.
Sanders insists that this policy is not designed to manufacture new Democrat voters, however, its point beyond this purpose remains unclear. Fighting for murderers and rapists to have the right to help choose our nation’s leaders while they are separated from society behind bars seems like a very odd cause for a Presidential candidate to take on.
